外婆家@杭州大厦D(Waipojia), Hangzhou, China (Food rating: 4/5)

After the superb dining experience at Waipojia, we came back again to dine at the restaurant. This time, we tried the other outlet at block D of Hangzhou Tower City Shopping Mall near Wulin Square. Located at the fifth level of the mall, it was a beautiful place overlooking the sky garden just outside the restaurant. The interior design was very classic Chinese look. As the weather turned cool, it seemed that most of the malls and restaurants did not turn on the air conditioner. Thus, it was rather stuffy and warm. The good thing was that the restaurant opened the windows to allow the cool wind to enter the restaurant. Otherwise, we would be perspiring profusely whilst dining.

At Waipojia, you can drink their osmanthus tea for free. You can the drinks at a station in the restaurant. The cups used were made of bamboo. The osmanthus fragrance was truly aromatic. From afar, I could smell the soothing and alluring fragrance. When you drink it, it was subtle and light. It was very intriguing.

Once again, Waipojia amazed me with their high quality culinary cuisine. We spent RMB 180 (SGD36) for two persons and it was a wonderful dining experience. This time, the food selection was more delicious and more appetising.

After a hearty dinner, we walked to Block C for grocery shopping before heading back to the hotel.

The pork belly slices with paprika (dried chilli powder) was extremely delicious. The paprika powder coated pork belly was very tender. As you chewed longer, you could taste the sweetness from the meat. (Food rating: 4/5)

The Beef with Mushroom in Thick Soup (西湖牛肉羹) was more flavourful, compared to the Southern Song Dynasty Fish Soup (宋嫂鱼羹) we ate a couple of day ago. I could taste the fresh beef bits in the soup. The viscosity of the soup was prefect and the egg were mixed very well. After dining at the Waipojia for the second time, my friend and I have concluded that the soup and noodles came in large portions which were more suitable to get eat with more persons. Therefore, whenever you consider ordering a bowl of soup of noodles, please be mindful of the portion. Otherwise, it was absolutely delicious and you would want to have more. (Food rating: 4/5)

Whole chicken (茶香鸡) was cooked in a claypot. Even so, the skin was crispy and the meat was very tender. The meat was easily torn apart and easy for eating. Although its chinese name indicated that it was cooked with tea leaves, I could not say that I could taste the tea fragrance. However, after some time, the chicken tasted more and more salty. I recommend that the chicken should be best eaten with steamed white rice. (Food rating: 3/5)

Pianerchuan (片儿川) is a bowl of noodles with preserved vegetables and snow vegetables. I loved both the noodles and the broth. The perfectly cooked noodles in the delicious broth were heavenly. I could not describe any better than saying, this is superbly good. A must try. Note that the portion was huge. Therefore, the bowl of Pianerchuan was best eaten with two or three other persons.  (Food rating: 4/5)

Braised Duck Meat (杭州卤鸭) reminded me of my mother’s cooking. The sauce was very similar to the way my mother cooked with chicken. She uses cinnamon and star anise. For every piece of duck meat I ate, I was reminded of home. It really brought back fond memories. The duck meat was tender and the sauce was thick and fragrant. (Food rating: 4/5)

The prawn cracker with tomato sauce (番虾㶽巴) was a huge portion of prawn crackers drizzled with tomato sauce. From the picture in the menu, the portion looked very small. At first, I thought that I was going to have snacks. The tomato sauce was overtly sour and it was too much for us to finish. You have to eat it fast as the crackers turned soggy due to the tomato sauce. (Food rating: 2.5/5)

On top of these dishes, we also ordered our all time favourite - flat noodles with cold sauce (西子凉粉)  which was consistent through the various outlets.
